About the event

PVD World Music will host a multi-event pop-up series from August 15-25, on the theme of the gourd, or calabash, as a unifying symbol that connects diverse musical traditions around the world. The central event will be “Finding the Spirit of Inanga” a curated exhibition of Indigenous African musical instruments. The Opening Reception & Concert is on Sunday, August 17 at 2 pm, followed by a vibrant lineup of special cultural events including a weeklong Kora workshop during which participants will be able to learn how to play the Kora directly from master musician Yacouba Diabate, and perform with him at the end of the week on Friday Aug 22.

 PVD World Music aims to promote, celebrate and enrich the musical traditions and arts of African refugees and immigrants in Rhode Island for present and future generations. Each year, we host over 30 concerts free of charge to the public and in diverse communities in Rhode Island. We also host a five-day African Film and Arts Festival through Providence.
